PSA Announcement: Texting and Driving

Dear Public,

This service announcement is brought to you courtesy of my tears and aching butt.

Texting and driving is not worth it. "Texting" also includes email, browsing the web, and as I learned today searching google for an address I needed. Apparently pulling over to the side of the road is "better than dying".

Also learned that opening mail and glancing through my playlist are all things that are counted in there with texting.

Supposedly it would be better off for me and my bountiful booty if I just left the phone in the glove compartment. I am still barely allowed to check it at stoplights, but am strongly advised against it.

:-p

  1. Okay...pulling out the big guns YL and giving you my complete, unfiltered, opinionated thoughts! Put it away. Put it in the back seat where you can't reach it. Don't look at it at stoplights or anywhere else unless you are parked with the motor turned off. It's one thing to get in an accident and hurt yourself because you were distracted for 2 seconds. Picture in your head how everyone's world would change forever if you hurt someone else or God forbid, caused an accident that killed someone's child or mother, or father. You get the idea. I know...harsh but it happens and not a single one of us are invincible. Be wise!

    1. Hi Susie!! I really get what you're saying and where you're coming from. I guess I just feel like I use common sense and don't try to text or search or anything when there is a lot of traffic, but I guess the more comfortable I get with doing it when there are two other cars on the 40mph road I'll start doing it on the highway or something...

Since My Man's accident he is even more vigilant. I think he also doesn't/didn't realize how much I am able to do while driving until he was riding with me yesterday. He seemed incredulous as I started flipping through the mail. *laugh* To me it's being multi-tasked, but I can see how if any variable in my situation changed it could be very unsafe.

He did make a cute comment though, as I was speeding away from a green light. *speeding meaning going fast, not going over the limit :)* "YL, when we strike it rich I am gonna make you take a defensive driving course (my little subby heart falls bc I think he is displeased) and then buy you a sports car, so you can drive fast like you love!" **GRIN** I dunno why, but that one comment just made my heart soar. :D

    2. I'm glad you heard this in the right way...me shaking my finger and all. I can get a little big sisterly at times.

I think you are right--we get too used to doing things that are a little dangerous and then take it to the next level without even thinking about it. That's when we find ourselves in real trouble.

  2. Just tossing my two cents in with Susie's - multi-tasking while you are driving is a good way to get someone killed. Not just you. The road, and the people ON it, deserve your undivided attention - 40 MPH is plenty fast enough for horrible things to happen. (as my driving instructors told me - two cars colliding at 40 MPH is like one car slamming into a brick wall at 80 MPH)

    1. So I've heard :)

I guess I should clarify that I barely do it, but I am going to try very hard not to do it anymore.

  3. Well I didn't want to make you feel bad YL, but, I agree with your other commenters! Seriously, put it away. Drive the car, don't multitask! Its one thing to get yourself in an accident, but most often innocent people get involved.

    1. Man y'all make it sound like drunk driving... I get the point. It's unsafe. :)

I feel like if someone could see what I actually do they'd be less freaked out, but I understand that texting a little when the road is empty can lead to texting a lot when there are many cars.

    2. Nah, I know what you are talking about, and I did it too, until I realized that sometimes just that one thing leads to doing one more thing. So, I just don't anymore. Takes the guessing out of it.

  4. My bottom has also felt the importance of not touching my phone while driving. I am getting very good at ignoring the darned thing. ;)
